Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the Upazila name. It is learnt that in past during the region of Emperor Islam Shah one Mr. Golap Roy was appointed the Dewan (Revenue collector) of Sylhet area. He became prominent by virtue of his social work and pity. He set up a trading centre meaning ganj on the bank of the river Surma that was named Golabganj after his name.
